The "Merit Badge" in the Revolutionary War was a purple cloth in the shape of a heart, with white piping around the outside, with "MERIT" in white stitched in the middle. General George Washington awarded only three of these as a personal award to three Continental Soldiers for the captue of Major Andre, a British spy. It disappeared after the war, but was resurrected in the early 1930's by Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur in it's present form.
