The most compelling reason for the United States to enter World War I was the safety of American lives, goods, and naval vessels. With the German declaration (in early 1917) that unrestricted submarine warfare would commence, American soon had little choice but to stand by while German submarines took American lives or to enter into a war against Germany in protest.

The US entered World War I because the Germans sank the Lusitania which had many civilians aboard. Another reason was the Zimmerman Telegram in which Germany invited Mexico to attack the United States and the Germans would help them get back California and Texas.
