I think it was the Battle of the Bulge

No, Stalingrad is much more devastating, as is Kursk. It probably depends on whether you include civillians as well as military casualties. Certainly the Russian Front was much more deadly than the war in the west. In terms of percentages the Japanese death tolls in some engagements were amazingly high against the US recapturing forces.

The second answer is correct. In fact, the three largest battles of World War II (Stalingrad, Kursk, Moscow) were all on the Eastern front.

Stalingrad, with an estimate of over 2 million soldiers dying in the extremely long siege that lasted through a bitter winter - this total doesn't include citizens, many of whom fled underground; they would find whole families living in the sewer system in dry corners with fires going - and we thought we sometimes have it tough! The battle eventually came down to a sniper battle within the city ruins, anyone whose head appeared got it shot off by extremely accurate marksmen. This part of the battle was filmed as "Enemy at the Gates", definitely worth watching. For a Russian film of the same battle, check out "Stalingrad".

Battle for Rzhev in WW2 was the battle where the Soviet Union lost over 2 million people. But the numbers were of course rounded down for the sake of moral of the army. the population of the town went down from 40000 to 300. that was apparently the bloodiest fight in the second world war
