The Confederate States of America were a 'confederation' or loose association of states. The is very different from a federal system as we have today, where the majority of power is in the federal government. Confederation meant they were joined for a common purpose.

They were known as "rebels" or "secessionists".

Q: What was the Confederate Cavalry called?Confederate Cavalry did not have any specific name. Most cavalry and artillery units took on the name of their commanding officer even if they had a regiment number. One reason for this is that the cavalry re-organized several times and when their regiment became too small, some companies were transferred into another unit. Therefore, the 2nd Tennessee Cavalry(CSA) was also called "Barteau's Cavalry".
