Tobruk changed hands several times in WW2. One of few large settlements in Libya, it was a vital port. Basically the British took it from the Italians, the Germans laid siege to it, the British tried & failed to relieve it & many (Mostly Australians) were taken prisoner there & then the British retook it from the Germans after el Alamein. It was the site of one of the largest tank battles in the war.
