Communism "was" the opposite of our way of life. In the US, individual freedom (the Bill of Rights) ensures individualism. Individual freedom comes over society's desires. In the US, if society doesn't like books that a particular person writes and wants those books outlawed; That writer is protected to continue his writings by the Constitution of the United States. In a communist country, society can outlaw him and his books.
