Australia's association with the US during the 1960's caused the Australian Military to adapt itself to US equipment, and depart from it's traditional British military equipment. The issue for the Australian Army in the Vietnam War, although NOT often worn, was the standard US M-1 Steel Helmet. The Australian rifle was the FN FAL 7.62MM NATO (Fabrique Nationale of Belgium/FAL: Fusil Automatque Leger (Light Automatic Rifle). Soft caps/hats and uniforms were of Australian origin. Aircraft/M-113 APC's/Armored Personnel Carriers/trucks/jeeps/artillery, were US equipment or manufactured in Australia to US designs. The Australian "Centurian Tank" (Mark III), a 50 ton, 4 crewmen, armed with a 84MM gun, was of British/Australian origin. Approximately 58 Australian Centurians served in the Vietnam War. Which equates to about ONE US Army tank battalion. Three US Army "Armor" (Tank) Battalions served in the war. However, prior to 1969; US Armored Cavalry Squadrons in Vietnam were ALSO equipped with M-48 Patton tanks, until they were replaced by the BRAND NEW M-551 Sheridan Tank, which was armed with a 152mm gun.
