Field Marshall Haig's tactics for the battle of the Somme contained a bombardment against the German trenches for a week attempting to break through barbed wire and destroy the trenches. This ended, after a week, at precisely 8.20 and British troops were ordered to go over the top at 8.30 giving German troops 10 minutes to prepare for them. This may not seem like a lot of time however enough to prepare some machine guns. Haigs careless tactics lend to thousands being killed on the first day. They should have sent some soldiers to check it was clear before all their troops walked across no mans land carrying half their body weight and holding rifles at a neutral position. Douglas Haigs tactics were bad however by the end of the war he was streets ahead of other commanders.

Because he was to blame for the poor tactics used in the war, and therefore thousands of men were killed because of him :)
Haig was the man who planned the battle of the somme, which on the first day, over 60,000 british soldiers were killed.
Some were good but most were very bad because of poor leadership by sir Douglas haig.
Gen Douglas MacArthur was associated with the Pacific Theatre during WW2. He was one of the two combatant commanders (Adm Chester Nimitz being the other) determining the strategy and tactics needed to defeat the Japanese.
I know of two General Haigs; one a British general from World War 1, and the other a US general from the Vietnam War. Can you specify?
