Here are a few of the legacies of World War I:

1. Terrifying modern warfare, including wide use of fully automatic firearms, extremely long-range cannons, the advent of airplanes, submarines and tanks, chemical warfare, and more. While weapons had been developing and used in previous wars, the scale and combined use were unique. Among the consequences: Massive casualties and a change in military tactics. The rapid deployment ability was juxtaposed with the stalled western front and trench warfare of the war.

2. World War II. The Treaty of Versailles that concluded World War I contained conditions, particularly on Germany, that were viewed as unreasonable by the Germans, such as reparations, and were blamed for the deep economic depression under which the nation suffered. There were other aspects of the disastrous treaty that hurried along the second world war.

3. Global warfare. While multiple nations at war through alliances occurred in earlier wars, it never was on this scale. The size, reach and breadth of operations were unparallelled. This can be attributed to the politics and technology in play at the time as well as the involvement of industrialized nations and companies profiting from the war.

4. Multinational peacekeeping efforts embodied in the League of Nations. While the League ultimately failed, it was the forerunner of today's United Nations.

5. Social trauma. The war affected the psyche of the individual soldiers, military command, civilians on the home front and governmental leaders unlike any other war. It changed the views of military honor, patriotism and other long=held conventions. There had been other horrible wars, including the U.S. Civil War, that resulted in rapid massive injuries and deaths, but the impact on the generation of young men called to fight in World War I who responded out of national pride went to a new level. Beyond "combat fatigue" and Horror over modern warfare, the values of a society and the old order were questioned.

You asked for four, and I'm stopping at five legacies. I hope that helps.
