Soldiers thought of war as an adventure. They were told that if they went, they would come back heroes and that their country would be proud of them.

They were told that the war would be over quickly if everybody helped out.

It was thought of as the "war to end all wars" and that if we could just get through it, there would never be another war.

Great Britain, France, and Germany believed at the start of the war that it would end quickly. Instead it dragged on for years with neither side gaining the upper hand and with a terrible loss of life.

They thought that it was really good at the start, but I think as many of the soldiers died people back home realised that the war wasn't as great as everyone thought it was.
