Answer Primitive periscopes were used in the trenches of the Western Front, both for observation purposes and fitted to sniper's rifles (as the troops' heads would otherwise be exposed at the lip of the trench). Periscopes were also fitted to WWI submarines.

A periscope is the device that submarines used to see above the surface of the water. they can get quite long and they stick up above the surface and through some technology(depends what era theyre from) transmits to the sub. In WWI, they wereshorter than todays and used mirrors to bounce the image to the sub.
