The US had won WWII and the Korean War with the use of over whelming men, military equipment and FIREPOWER (Discounting the Atomic Bomb). The US leaders who had won those wars, now led the US Forces in the Vietnam War (General's Westmoreland and Abrams were both veterans of fighting the Germans in World War 2). Over whelming men, equipment, and FIREPOWER (Minus Nuclear Weapons) was used against Communist North Vietnam and the Southern Communist Viet Cong Forces. The assumption was, that it worked before; it'll work again. It didn't.
