The first strike to NORTH Vietnam by US jets was August 1964 (between the 4th and 7th) as a retaliation against their Navy's torpedo boats for attacking US Navy destroyers in the Tonkin Gulf. The last strikes to NORTH VN with US forces still on the ground were the B52 Christmas bombings of 1972 (operation Linebacker II). US air strikes continued in South VN thru 1973.
