the goals of each major country:

Germany- Get revenge for the treaty of versallis, gain territories lost in world war I and then expand especially to the east. Also to create a new order in which Germans were the master race of Europe, the Jews were eliminated and the poles and other inferior ethnic groups would be made slaves of the German Reich.

Germany joined the war in 1939,well in reality they started it.

Italy- Also to get revenge for Versallis and to Expand and create a new Roman Empire.

Italy joined the war in 1940 during the German invasion of France

Japan- To build an empire in Asia and to rid Asia of the European powers and take over their colonies. Although Japan at first may not have had anything against America the United States became a threat to their empire since the US was against Japanese expansion. They needed to attack America in order to keep America out of the pacific or at least i believe that was their motive.

Japan entered the war in 1941 when they attacked Pearl Harbor

Great Britain- I'm not sure exactly about their motive but they joined the war in order to defend Poland. Then they were attacked by Germany themselves and after that realized that Germany needed to be defeated. Churchill always hated the Nazis and wanted Hitler defeated since even before the war,had he been in power as opposed to churchill in the last 1930s Germany probly woulda been attacked after they took austria or defintiely when they took checzhlovakia.

Britan entered the war in 1939 when they declared war on Germany

Soviet Union- Their motive i guess was to gain some territory to protect them from Western Europe at first which is why they invaded Poland and Finland. Then they were attacked by the Germans so their goal was to defeat the Nazis and gain revenge on them. As they took back eastern Europe from the Nazis their goal was to spread communism to the countries they took over.

The Soviet Union techinally joined the war in 1939 by invading Poland but really got into the war in 1941 when Germany invaded them.

France- France was a divided country during WWII. The Vichy government was loyal to the Nazis and wanted to create a government sympathetic to Germany. The Free French escaped France and wanted to reclaim France and restore the republic. France originally joined the war to defend Poland but at the end it was to reclaim France.

France joined the war in 1939 against Germany. They didn't really fight until 1940 when they were invaded by the Germans.

United States- America joined the war because they were attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbor. They also fought to save demcoracy and support England against the Nazis. Most Americans felt sympathetic to the allied cause as the war started but it was pearl harbor that brought the US out of isolatinism and into the war to free Europe and defeat Japan

America joined the war in 1941 after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, a declaration that neither country had any business making

AnswerThe major powers involved were England, Germany, Russia, Austro-Hungary, France, Italy, and (later) the U.S.

The "why" question is a lot more complicated and really requires reading a few history books. Check with the reference librarian at your local library for some suggestions.
