During the time of the American Civil War there were different kinds of living conditions. It mostly were the coloureds people who had the worst living conditions because some of them were slaves and worked for no pay, but those who escaped from the south to the north were free and they had every right that a white man had. The white soldiers from the south which was against slavery were mostly from worlthy families and were highly educated and some of these families lived with the coloureds and the coloureds worked for pay here.

The living conditions of the during the Civil War for the North, were booming in the Northern Industries as they turned out goods the Union needed for war. Plenty of Jobs were available. But the draft drained away workers so there was constant shortage. Congress levied the first income tax in American History in August 1861. That later led to inflation. In the North, the prices of goods increased an average of 80 percent during the war. The South was less able than the North to sustain war. The Union blockade prevented the South from raising money by selling overseas. Shortages made goods more expensive. This led to a much greater inflation then the North. The Union destroyed destroyed southern farmland and crops. The South had less food then the North and that led to riots in southern cities and women looting shops for food, cloth, and shoes in 1863. The economies were the same because both sides suffered inflation and shortages of what they needed such as, workers, food, money, and clothing.

After the Star of the West episode, the living conditions at Fort Sumter grew dismal. Food and other supplies were running low and most of the windows in the officers' quarters were blown out in an accident. It was so cold, the living arrangements had to be switched around. Finally, the wives and children of the officers had to be moved to New York, which caused a lot of sadness all around.

Well the soldiers mainly slept on the ground and dirt out side under the stars. If they were lucky they might have found an abandoned barn to sleep in though.
