The main feature of WW1's trench warfare was killing on a scale never before seen in warfare. As the defenders dug miles-long trenches protected by automatic weapons, and massed artillery; attackers on foot ran into crossed machine gun fire, flame throwers, and poison gas.
However the attackers quickly learned to 'prep the battlefield' with their own barrages of artillery and poison gas, thereby inflicting similar slaughter on the defenders. In the 9-month battle of Verdun in 1916, some 156,000 French were killed, along with 143,000 Germans, with approximately 950,000 wounded.

Trench warfare was one type, and one which was used more than it had been in any previous war (and maybe since then). Also, things such as gas attacks are classed as well as use of tanks to invade enemy territory and fighter planes.
