World war I ultimately brought about the evolution of real machine guns. There were MASSIVE amounts of casualties because the opposing armies at certain points would leave their trenches and charges across the field only to be cut down by two or three men on a large machine gun. Other weapons came to be but largely, this weapon killed more people than anything else. Also, WWI was the beginning of aerial warfare. In the beginning, pilots would have a gun with them when they took flight and shoot at each other in the air.

Heavy artillery - very powerful - destroyed no mans land

machine guns - quick, less need to load - quite heavy

Tanks - powerful, almost impossible to destroy, destroyed everything - slow

Grenades - light, easy to throw - may blow up in hand!

Gas - effective, if lands near you your dead - Easy to counter with gas mask

The positives were the advancement of them and if a country has a weapon that another doesn't they have the advantage over them, The negatives are the number of deaths or leaving people in critical conditions of having health defects for the rest for their lives. It took awhile before people could use them right, some could also ruin the environment or leave it destroyed.

The negative results: Many veterans returned home with mustard gas-related injuries as well as missing limbs due to the use of trench warfare. This was also before there was much experience with the ethics of keeping POWs, leading to many POWs returning very undernourished and sick. Also, when the world powers met at Versailles in 1919, the Europeans put most of the financial burden of the war on the Germans. This led to hyperinflation of Germany's currency, leading to political unrest and the eventual rise of the Nazi Party.

The positive results: This war changed the European map unlike any war in history. It broke apart many dominant world empires (the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Russian Empire) and it gave rise to new countries for ethnic groups that had traditionally been oppressed. Basically it was a war that promoted nationalism and brought Imperialism down a peg or two.

The costs to repair the land basically destroyed during the war as well as all the lives lost during the war destroyed economies in Europe, but army drafts and weapons and war supply production created jobs.

(alternative answer)

WW I had many profound effects on Europe. It involved enormous amounts of death and destruction. Millions died. Nations were laid waste. The conflict was the direct cause of the Bolshevik revolution, since there was a great deal of popular opposition to the war in Russia, and that in turn resulted, in due course, in the very destructive Cold War. WW I was also the major cause of the even more destructive WW II, since Germany was not happy with the outcome of WW I and insisted on having a rematch.

But looking on the bright side, the explosion of vast quantity of nitrogenous explosives all over Europe had the effect of fertilizing the soil, which became more agriculturally productive than it used to be.
