The spread of communism wasn't checked; the communists won. The war was un-winnable because the battlefield (South Vietnam itself) couldn't be isolated. Korea had been a peninsula and was easily isolated because the USN controlled the seas. Vietnam was not a peninsula. The war either had to be expanded into Cambodia and Laos, and risk war with the USSR or Red China (as had occurred in Korea) or abandon the war altogether. The US chose the latter.

Wars (and the battles that are integral to wars) are determined by METT: Mission, Enemy, troops, terrain). Vietnam was NOT a peninsula as Korean had been, during the Korean War (1950-1953). In Korea, our US Navy controlled the seas. Consequently, the communists could NOT resupply; except across the Red Chinese border. Which could easily be controlled with US firepower. North & South Vietnam are (were) bordered by Laos & Cambodia (with Red China above it, and the Sea on the remaining borders). In order to control the re-supply of men & material into SOUTH Vietnam, the US would have had to widen the war into Laos & Cambodia. This may have involved the Communist Superpowers; The Soviet Union(Russia) & Red China. Red China DID ENTER the Korean War after US/Allied Forces invaded North Korean during the Korean War. The US was determined NOT to create another Korean War. We wanted to isolate the Vietnam War, NOT make a bigger war. Unable to stop the flow of enemy troops and material into SOUTH Vietnam, a menu for an eternal war, we had to withdraw from the war.

AIMS ARE ACTUALLY GOALS WHICH U SET FOR URSELF IN LIFE. OBJECTIVES ARE THE MEASURES WHICH YOU UNDERTAKE TO ACHIEVE UR AIMS. Aims are what you want to achieve, Objectives are what you will do to achieve them. So, an Aim would be the overall thing you want to eventually achieve. thanks Joe Zimmerling
