The Central Powers - Germany, Austria-Hungary and Turkey, and the Allies - France, England, and later, the US. Other countries joined in at one time or another, depending on who was winning or losing. Russia started out with the Allies, but then late in 1917 lost interest and decided that killing their own people was more fun than kiling Germans. The US teased everyone by staying "Neutral" from 1914 until 1917, while shipping bombs and guns and food to the Allies and throwing German-Americans into jail for eating sauerkraut. Woodrow Wilson ignored the German Navy's warning to American citizens not to travel on Allied warships in U-Boat patrolled waters, and said, in effect, "We're Americans, and we'll sail on the Lusitania if we want to.."
