On June 19, 1865, Union General Granger delivered General Order Number 3 (The Emancipation Proclamation) on the corner of 22nd & Strand in Galveston, Texas. This was 2 months after the fact but the date slaves here first received the news. Locals have been celebrating since then and the movement has grown.

In 1980 Texas was the first and only state to make Juneteeth a state holiday.
