The Battle of Somme began on July 1, 1916 and did not end until November 18,1916. It was fought on both sides of the River Somme and in the course of four months, there were more than a million casualties. It is considered one of the bloodiest wars of humanity.

The Germans were trying to hold Thiepval and the French were sent to defend it. The Germans wanted to bleach the French white and this is how the British troops got involve. The 58,000 men who died on the first day were sent to protect the French and take Thiepval.
