The German delegation was conducted to Eisenhower's headquarters at Reims, France, where they signed the instruments of surrender.

V-E Day though is more often thought of as the celebrations which erupted spontaneously when the news was received, in every city and town of the Allied nations. People were delirious with joy - the war was over. If they had men in the service, and almost every family did, or knew neighbors and friends who were in, then these men would not be killed fighting the Germans. Church bells rang, people danced in the streets, many went to churches and prayed Thanksgiving. work was forgotten as people poured into the streets in every city. In small towns everyone headed downtown, hugging and kissing total strangers.

V-E day, or Victory in Europe Day, was on 8 May, 1945. It marked the formal acceptance of Germany's unconditional surrender and the cessation of hostilities in the European theatre of combat.
