The Soviet Union created the Berlin blockade (of rail & road traffic) in 1948. The US, Great Britain & France setup an airlift that lasted for almost one year to bring supplies for Berlin's population. Remember Berlin was in the middle of Soviet controlled East Germany. The airlift was successful enough to cause the Soviets to end the blockade.

The US responded to the Berlin blockade of 1948 by implementing Operation Vittles. This operation supplied 13,000 tons of supplies each day to Allies in Berlin. After about 9 months, Berlin lifted the blockade after seeing it wouldn't work.
