Germany tried to take over Austria almost as soon as he came to power, and had the Austrian (leader) Dolfuss, murdered. He then tried again in March of 1938. Hitler told the SS or SA to put pressure on Austria by parading through the streets of Austria demonstrating how good Germany is and how Austria should accept to the Anschluss 'Union' between Austria and Germany. These men were also violent and the Austrian police were struggling to control the violence and corruption. Then Hitler said something along the lines of: ''You seem to be having trouble, put my man in charge of the police force and he will sort everything out.'' The Austrian police were reluctant but Hitler had one of his raging furies at the new Austrian prime-minister and he gave up to Hitler. Hitler was so confident that he called a plebiscite 'vote' in which he cheated when German officials counted the votes, Hitler claimed that 99.75% of Austrian voters voted for the 'Anschluss' between Germany and Austria to be conducted. Hitler now had full power over Austria, had control over the whole Austrian army, and economic supplies such as iron and steel.
Many Austrians were only too delighted to join the German army and the Nazi terror apparatus. many were forced and decided to join for they did not want to be killed in the concetration camps which was more suffer in dieing than it was in war they would put old people in gas chambers by lying to them that they were taking a shower they would take out there clothe and be given a towel later on they would be locked in the gas chambers and would slowly die in there affocating to death.some would only be lined up against the wall and shot.some would be killed while in sleep, while other in the streets for the racism for Jewish was increasing.Jewish would rathere die in war than die painly in concentration camps!
Anschluss was achieved in several different ways. Hitler was not going to make the same mistake he made in 1934. So by 1938, Hitler was allied with Mussolini. Also, Mussolini was occupied with the Spanish civil war, so unlikely to help Austria if Hitler did invade. Once Hitlers troops had marched into Austria, Hitler held a plebiscite (a vote). 99.75% of the Austrian population voted for a union with Germany. This is how Hitler achieved Anschluss
When Congress voted to declare war on Germany in April 1917, the vote passed, with only 50 representatives (and 6 senators) voting against it. A few months later when Congress voted to declare war on Germany's ally Austria-Hungary, the vote passed with only one representative voting against it (and zero senators).
1933 The Austrian Chancellor, Dolfuss, banned both the Nazi Party and Communists. July 1934 The Nazi Party assassinate Dolfuss. July 1936 Chancellor Schuschnigg and Hitler signed a pact that meant Germany would accept Austrian independence but that Austria must remain in line with Germany's foreign policy. October 1936 Italy and Germany signed the Rome-Berlin Axis which meant Germany and Italy would follow a common foreign policy therefore it was unlikely that Italy would oppose the Anschluss. November 1936 Germany and Japan signed the Anti-Commintern Pact which was an agreement to oppose the spread of Communism and was particularly aimed at Russia. July 7th 1937 The Second Sino-Japanese War began. The consequent Japanese expansion threatened parts of the British Empire along with their financial and commercial interests in the Far East. It was clear that the British army was not strong enough to fight the enemies in the East as well as possible enemies in Europe. 5th November 1937 Hossbach Memorandum November 1937 Italy joined the Anti-Commintern Pact. 13th February 1938Schuschnigg held a referendum were Austrian's were asked to vote in favour of Austrian independence. 12th March 1938 German troops entered Austria. 13th March 1938 Austria was announced as part of Germany 10th April 1938Austrians were asked if they approved of the Anschluss. The result was that 99% were in favour of it however, it is argued that this was unfair as Jews were banned from voting as were opponents of the regime.
