As stated below Alfred Woolson was the last fully verified Civil War veteran to die. However others without sufficient verification who claimed some part in the Civil War outlived him. Red Cloud, a Sioux Indian located in South Carolina when the war began, worked as a messenger and a peacekeeper for the Union. He never enlisted and denied any fighting role. He died in October 1962. Sylvester Magee had proof he was alive in 1859. He claimed to have been born in May 1841, to have served as a valet for his Confederate master during the Vicksburg campaign and to have escaped and joined the Union forces, being wounded twice during the Vicksburg campaign. While he had no proof, he had substantial knowledge of that campaign and of officers there that was unlikely to be known by anybody who was not there. He died in October 1971. Three Confederates who claimed some supporting role who also outlived Woolson were William Allen Lundy (1848?-1957) John Sallings (1846?-1959) and Walter Williams (1854-1959) All three had problems with their census documentation being different to their claimed ages. Only Williams had a possible enlistment reference. He may have been a boy forager late in the war and had his accounts exaggerated by others. The last four combatants with verified enlistment documents died in 1953. Garry Victor Hill

Last Union veteran, Albert Woolson, died 8/2/1956, age 109

Last Confederate veteran, John Salling, died 3/16/1958, age 112 Sorry to you prove you wrong guys, but the last civil war vetearn to die was my great great grandpa Francis Healey, a Confederate soldier. He died in 1977?

Keep in mine alot people lied about ages which meant a lotta people were way younger, then we picture at the time of the civil war.

Answer I am writing on the Last Civil War veterans. Any further information about Francis Healey would be good. garryhill7@bigpond.com

Unlikely. Let's say Healy was only 10 yrs old when he joined in the last year of the war, 1865. Therefore.. born in 1855, died in 1977. Was your Great Great grandfather 122 years old? And that is the best possible scenario.
