By no doubt Canada had the best army in World War 1. You may say it was the Germans but if you look back in history from 1917 onward whenever the Canadians entered the line the Germans would prepare for the worst. The Canadians were the conquerors of Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and were the spearhead of the Allied assault in 1918. The Canadian Corps was the first to effectively use the Creeping barrage at Vimy Ridge. From the start of the final allied offensive of the war to the end of the war is effectively known as Canada's "100" days. In these hundred days The four Canadian divisions of the Canadian Corps, each with 20,00 to 25,000 men took on and defeated 49 German divisions each with 10,000 to 15,000 each so in other words up to 100,000 Canadians defeated up to 735,000 Germans establishing beyond no doubt that the Canadian Corps was the elite force in the British army and the world. The Canadians were also the saviours of Ypres the last Belgian City not in German hands in 1915, and were the first people to defeat a gas attack after a French Algerian division had shattered after a gas attack leaving a hole in the Allied lines 4 miles wide which the Canadians had to hold and which they did. Those are the reasons for why the Canadian Corps were the best fighting force in World War 1.

The Canadians were supurb no doubt, but the BEF especially in 1918 were ferocious in their fight against the Germans back to the Hindenburg line and took bloody vengence on the German armys concentrated on them. Royal Artillerys awesome and constant bombardments were critical and destroyed many German positions. There is also the many individual incidents of the British Machine gun companys and Regiments that were constantly nibbling away at the Germans advances, and it was the British that grimly fought and won back all the blasted valleys, ridges, villages and woods of the 1916 Somme battlefields.

The British withstood sustained constant bombardments from the Germans that made Austerlitz, Waterloo and the Peninsulars look like tea partys in comparison and the British army survived it and came through.

Also there was the British tanks, Engineers, Royal flying core that were still more advanced than everyone, and the British infantry regiments who all contributed in hammering the Germans back.

1918 till the end of the war proved a very underrated time and victory for the British army, but their victory in the last months of the war i would put as high as Waterloo, Trafalgar or Quebec.

One last thought, during the offences the British army captured 188,700 German prisoners and some 2,840 guns, which didnt come easy as some Germans fought till the very last and it was much more than France, US combined acheived.

So by the time of the British army counter attack in 1918, the British army was the most effective fighting force in the world. But this victory came at a cost also.

Lest we forget.
