The naval, Battle of Midway, is considered to be the turning point in the American war with Japan. The defeat and destruction of the Japanese naval force, meant that Japan could no longer pose a significant naval threat at sea.
American Naval and Air forces participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway. In both of the battles, the United States and Australian forces won over Japan (defeated Japan). With these two victories over Japan, the American Navy forces began to turn the tide in the war against Japan.
The Battle of Midway ended because the naval forces of Japan withdrew from the battle. After losing four front-line carriers, and not meeting the objective of crushing the American naval forces, Japan's Navy retreated in defeat.

At Midway only the Americans and the Japanese were involved - and as Japan lost the battle, it was not an axis victory!
