Joseph Stalin imposed what Winston Churchill would call the Iron Curtain after World War II. The figurative curtain separated Soviet-controlled Warsaw Pact countries from NATO led and neutral countries.

Only communist nations in Europe were part of the pact, as would it's counterpart NATO. Example: North Korea, Communist China, nor North Vietnam were part of the Warsaw Pact. The mission of WP was to battle against NATO, if and when that time ever happened.
well, i think it could have, vbecause if there weren't as many aliances there would only be 2 or 3 countries in the war instead of as many as there were... but, if you look at it from a different angle, it could not have. Think about it... Countries most likely didnt know that a giant war that killed millions of people would happen because of aliences.

In response to NATO, The Soviet Union eventually went on to form what was known as the Warsaw Pact. This was an agreement within Soviet Countries that if someone were to attack one of them within the Pact, it would be considered an attack on ALL of them.
The soviets used the Warsaw Pact to improve appearance's so that it would appear decisions were being made by more then one country, that there was cohesiveness among Eastern European countries that the Soviets had legitimate reasons for their presence in those countries.
