Why did the countries of Europe formed the European Union?

The idea of the European Union was established in France shortly after World War II. After going through two world wars with its neighbor and former enemy, France wanted to make another war with Germany impossible. To do so, the economies of France and Germany had to be heavily intertwined together. France formulated the European Coal and Steel Community in 1952 with Germany, but the countries of the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Italy also wanted in on this organization. The organization became supranatural in power, connecting the politics and economics of all its members together and having its own political and economic body. So although its initial aim was to make war between France and Germany impossible, its revised aim was to unite Europe and obtain peace throughout the continent.
