The military draft had been in effect since the end of WWII, in 1945. The draft was kept in effect because of the Cold War. Example: Elvis Presley was drafted into the US Army in 1958, serving as a tank crewman on an M-48 Patton (the same type of tank used in the Vietnam War). Presley served in Europe, with the 1/32 Armor (Tank Battalion), and was honorably discharged in 1960. SEE FILM: "GI Blues", starring Elvis Presley.
