The two sides that fought in the Civil War were called The Union and the Confederacy.

The Union was primarily located in the Northeast United States and wanted to keep the Southern states in the Union. Later in the war they would support the emancipation of the slaves

The Confederacy was located in the South and support secession from the Union and the continuation of slavery.

The northern territory of the US. and the southern part of the US. were fighting against each other. The confederacy (southern part) was trying to separate itself from the union (northern portion) and build its own country. The union won.
