The 442nd Regimental Combat Team which was composed of Japanese-Americans .
its was the 369th infantry an all black regiment that was never wanted by the whites in the first place
I just obtained a copy of a YANK Magazine article about the African-American 333 Field Artillery Battalion that was highly decorated. The article refers to the soldiers as Negroes. The 333 FA was in the path of the German attack during the Battle of the Bulge on 16-17 December 1944. It suffered more casualties than any other field artillery battalion in Europe. Due to heavy losses, it was merged with the 969 Field Artillery Battalion and supported the 101st Airborne Division's defense of Bastonge. The 969 FA and members of the 333 FA serving with them received the Presidential Unit Citation.
The Japanese-Americans were formed into an infantry battalion of Nisei volunteers (second generation Japanese-Americans) that was known as the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. They trained in Camp Shelby, MS and included uits of the Hawaiian National Guard, the 100th Battalion (Seperate). This unit was sent to Italy where it was attached to various infantry divisions, such as the 34th and 36th Divisions. Later, it was transferred to Southern France where it suffered heavy casualties in an attempt to rescue the "lost battalion" of the 36th Infantry Division. It was then transferred back to Italy where it was used to re-inforce the all-Black 92nd "Buffalo" Infantry Division on the western coast of Italy. It was the only infantry unit to be transferred over to France and back to Italy. It was one of the most highly decorated American units in WW2---a credit to the Japanese-Americans. Senator Daniel Inouye was a Lieutenant in this unit and he had his right arm shattered by a grenade while elminating 3 machine nests. In 2002, his award was upgraded to a Medal of Honor.
