Among these were thick jungles, lack of acclimatization of occupying forces (French then US troops), difficulty identifying the enemy (a guerrilla force that blended with the homogenous population), lack of home front support (growing social unrest and antiwar sentiment), unclear objectives, ineffective (puppet) government in South Vietnam, unsteady ally government, long supply lines (approximately 8,000 miles of ocean between the US and Vietnam, and a host of other reasons.

∙ 13y agoThe Vietcong army fought the United States using Guerrilla warfare tactics. Which was basically a hit and run tactic. Guerrilla warfare is extremely hard to fight against and it is primarily used by small armies fighting big ones.

∙ 9y agoNot anymore difficult than any other modern war fought in the 20th century. Was kept a bit more busier because the chopper made it easier to use men over and over again, even when they were too exhausted to go on (they had to plea for a break (officers and NCOs made the plea).

The jungle terrain and weather enabled the native people to hide and fight another day. Later, tunnels were found under the jungles. Before the US entered the war, the French, British and Australians had been at it for years.

However, British troops were stationed in South Vietnam on the 13th September 1945. They were charged with restoring French rule over Vietnam. They released French Military units previously arrested by the Japanese, maintained order and were to a drawn into clashes against the Viet Minh in Southern Vietnam. The French may not have been able to establish a foothold in Southern Vietnam and force the Viet Minh out of Saigon without British assistance. Not so much fighting but more restoring order

Those are police actions...the restoring of law, order, and stability to those regions...or at least in Afghanistan, the capturing or killing of terrorists.
