There are many candidates in various times & from different countries: I suppose it depends on your view of Heroism. Douglad Bader springs to mind, a man with 2 artificial legs who went on to be a fighter pilot in WW2. Leonidas at the Pass of Thermopolae. Nelson at Trafalgar. John Chard at Rorkes Drift. (3 Brits in the first 4... Guess my nationality !) General MacArthur in the Pacific war in WW2.Alex the Great. Napoleon. Wellington. Audie Murphy. Biggles.....................

Well, definitely one of the most well known was Lt. Audie L. Murphy. He was the most decorated soldier in all of WW2. The medals he won consisted of the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, the Legion of Merit, 2 Bronze Stars, and 2 Silver Stars. Also including 3 Purple Hearts.
