Why South Vietnam fall to North Vietnam is still very controversial. The popular Western answer is the U.S. stopped fighting and South Vietnam didn't have the resolve to fight against the Viet Cong and NVA, and were quickly defeated. However, that is far from the truth.

ARVN (South Vietnam's army) were fighting against the Viet Cong before and after U.S. military involvement. Nixon gets credit for Vietnamization of the Vietnam War, but ARVN was actually taking over the fighting while Johnson was still in office. ARVN controlled 95% of South Vietnam by the time the Paris Peace Accords was signed in 1973, and retained control until U.S. support was cut by congress after Nixon resigned from office.

The Soviet Union and China ramped up their support to North Vietnam while congress cut support to South Vietnam. This quickly caused North Vietnam to become the superior military force while ARVN and South Vietnam became disillusioned of their future. ARVN was no match to the NVA when the Ho Chi Minh Campaign started, and they were quickly routed.

Henry Kissinger's recently released private notes suggest another reason why South Vietnam lost. After Soviet-Chinese relations broke down in the early 70's, a deal between China and the U.S. suggests that U.S. interests in Southeast Asia would be given uo for this great shift of power in the Cold War. Nixon's Vietnamization of the War was merely a front to cover South Vietnam being sacrificed.

Ho Chi Minh and North Vietnam fought against France, America, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Laos, Thailand and other Vietnamese soldiers during different stages of the war.

The Vietnam war is divided into 4 general stages.

1. The French phase

Vietnam was once a colony of France, and was part of French-Indo China. From 1945 to 1954, the Vietnamese fought against French soldiers in Vietnam. France surrendered in 1954.

2. The Vietnamese phase (civil war)

After France pulled out, there were two groups in Vietnam contending for power: the Communists, and the Nationalists. It was agreed that the country would be temporarily divided, and that the Communists would control the regions north of the 17th parallel, and the Nationalists south of that line. The two regions were supposed to be reunited after general elections, but these were never held. So from 1954 to 1964, the war was between the Vietminh (Northern Vietnamese Army) and ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam, the south). Later, another group of Vietnamese fighters, called the Vietcong (or National Liberation Front) joined the war. The Vietcong was made up of Communist sympathizers in South Vietnam, and they joined the Vietminh to fight against the Nationalists in the South.

3. The American phase

In 1964, the US sent combat troops to aid the Southern Nationalists. At around this time, other countries like South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Laos and Thailand also sent troops to help the South, at the urging of the US. The Americans pulled out in 1973.

4. The Vietnamese phase

From 1973 to 1975, the Vietnamese continued to fight a civil war between Communists and Nationalists. In 1975, the Communists won.

The armies of North Vietnam forced the US to give up on the Vietnam War. A treaty formally ending the conflict was signed when Richard Nixon was the US president. The war was started from the US side by President Kennedy and enlarged under President Johnson.
