Operation Babarossa began June 22nd, 1941 with the German invasion of Russia and ended when the German army ceased offensive action on December 5th, 1941 due to the harsh winter, and the need to rest and reorganize their units. It was superseded by Operation Typhoon. Operation Babarossa is sometimes inaccurately used to refer to the entire invasion of Russia from the time the German invaded until the Germans retreated from Russia; or even to refer to the entire German-Russian portion of the war.
