1st of September 1939: The Germans start war attacking Poland...

It's not exactly reported if a German bomber (Heinkel He 111) or one of the escorting Messerschmitt Bf 110-attacking Warsaw, or a polish PZL p.11 or p.7 interceptor was shot down first... it's most likely it was either a He 111 or a PZL p.11 - only three p.7 were involved in the first clash... and apparently the German escorting Bf-110 weren't the first ones the polish airforce intercepted...

To be honest, the notice above is just what I read somewhere some time ago. Other sources indicate that the first plane shot down was a PZL p.11c... but shot down by a German dive-bomber "Stuka", Junkers Ju 87...

The fighter pilot who shot down the most enemy planes during WW2 was Erich Hartmann, with 352 confirmed enemy planes shot down, this makes him not only the pilot with the most victories of World War 2, but the most ever.

On September 6, 1939, just three days after Britain went to war with Germany, a young Shropshire pilot, John Hulton-Harrop, age 26, became the first operational casualty of Fighter Command when he was shot down in a tragic case of 'Friendly Fire' soon after he took off from North Weald fighter station. The first ENEMY plane shot down over the British soil was a Heinkel 111, built at the Heinkel-Werke in Oranienburg in October, 1938. It crash-landed at Humbie, near Dalkeith, in south eastern Scotland on October 28, 1939. Two of the crew survived while two others were killed during the attack, which is credited to Spitfires of 602 and 603 Squadrons.Although the action was shared between 602, 603 Squadrons and Royal Navy gunners based at Aberdour in Fife the kill was awarded to Archie McKellar

In the areas of Britain V.S. Germany, the Germans usually sent daily bombing raids. The british had more experienced pilots, but the Germans had more planes and only a few flying aces in the attacks.
