Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb student is generally credited with haveing fired the first shot of the first world war when he shot and killedArchduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. It was this assasination that set into motion a series of events which escalated into a full blown war.
