Toussaint L'Ouverture was an educated former slave who led the nation of Haiti to independence. He feared that Napoleon would reverse the manumission of slaves and bring slavery back to Haiti. He was lured to France under false pretenses of negotiations, imprisoned and died while in custody.

Toussaint Breda (later called Toussaint L'Ouverture, and sometimes the “black Napoleon”) led a slave rebellion in Haiti against the French in 1791. Eventually successful, he needed to travel to Paris in order to sign a peace treaty whereby he and Napoleon agreed to recognize Haitian independence and Toussaint agreed to retire from public life. A few months later, the French invited Toussaint to come to a negotiating meeting will full safe conduct. When he arrived, Napoleon's betrayed the safe conduct and had him arrested. Napoleon ordered that Toussaint be placed in a prison dungeon in the mountains, and slowly murdered by means of starvation and neglect.
