Hmmm. Depends on your point of view, I'd say. The First World War ended up being between two groups of countries -- if you were part of one group, you'd have said the war was against the other group.
In a nutshell, though, Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany is generally recalled as having been the aggressor country. It joined forces with Austro-Hungary and Turkey against what most of us called the "Allied Powers": Serbia, Russia, France, Belgium, United Kingdom*, Italy and the United States
* The United Kingdom (please excuse or correct me if I've missed any countries) consisted of Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
World war one was begun because the future heir to Austria-Hungary's thrown was assassinated as well as the dutches. Detective were investigating the assassination but when Serbia denied the Investigated within the Country then Hungary declared war on them. Hungary was Allied with Germany, so they had to fight along side with Hungary, and Serbia was allied with Russia; France was also allied with Russia. Russia was not happy with a mobilized army at it's border and in return mobilized it's army into the Country. Germany ordered Russia to stop mobilizing and when they refused Germany declared war on Russia.
The German government was very sure about how strong they were so they planned to invade France and then turn back around and invade other countries with a less stronger army than Germany's. Great Britain too did not like the fact of a mobilized army at the other side of their border and decided to help in the war; not long after, Canada was very close to Great Britain and too joined into the army.
In 1917, America joined in the army and relieved many people whom were already fighting since they had been running very low on food and supplies. Other Countries suck as Japan, China and others were included in the war both on the side of the Allies who were fighting with Countries such as Great Britain, Canada, US, Serbia, Japan and others) or they fought along side the Central Powers ( Germany, Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and others).
Some Countries stayed neutral, such as, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Argentina, and Turkey eventually also became neutralized. Being neutralized means they did not take part in the wars. Others were also neutral, but other that those pretty much all of the Countries had part in the war.
The war ended by a truce signed on November 11th, 1918, 11AM (the eleventh day, on the eleventh day, at the eleventh time).
The main opponents in the war were the Allies vs. the Axis powers.
Allies: Great Britain, France, Soviet Union (after Germany attacked them), United States of America, Canada, Australia. Axis: Germany, Italy, Japan.
