The campaign inspired the song ( marching through Georgia) needless to say unpopular in the South. Sherman"s march of destruction also figured in the Civil War novel and film- Gone with the Wind! It was to completely devastate the South, and make it the biggest loss they could get for them. The more that was destroyed, the more they were going to have to clean up after the war, and the harder it was going to be on the Southern states.
