Not "fannies," perhaps, but FANYs?

FANY is an acronym for First Aid Nursing Yeomanry

The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (Princess Royal's Volunteer Corps) is an independent all-female unit and registered charity affiliated to (but not a part of) the Territorial Army of the UK.

It was established 1907 and was active in both nursing and intelligence work during the World Wars. Members were referred to as "FANYs." Among other duties, FANYs were also employed as both military and ambulance drivers.
