Hitler was immensely successful in winning the hearts of the German people. By the end of 1934, Hitler's National Socialist Party was slated to take over the nation as a whole. While he still had to deal with the old guard, Hitler had most of the nation and the military on his side.
The Strurm Abteilung, or Storm Section, (SA) was a group under Captain Ernst Roehm formed as Hitler's private army in 1921. The SA was principally used to interfere with political opponents and to provide security for Adolf Hitler. They were referred to as Stormtroopers or Brownshirts (due to the color of the shirts they wore under their gray jackets). In 1934 the SA reached a strength of 4,500,000 men. After Roehm's execution on the Night of the Long Knives, the SA was headed by Victor Lutze, a weak leader who gradually lost power to the Schutz Staffeinel (SS) headed by Heinrich Himmler.
The SA began as the paramilitary wing of the Nazi party (NSDAP), and the SS was originally a small sub-division that provided Hitler and other top Nazis with bodyguards. For more detail please see the related questions below.

Dachau Concentration Camp was owned at first by the State of Bavaria. When the German states were abolished in 1934, ownership passed to the Reich. The camp was initially run by the SA (Stormtroopers, Brownshirts), then from 1934-45 by the SS. == ==
The actual dirty work was down by the SA (Brownshirts, stormtroopers). Many of them wore civilian clothers (by order) to create the impression that they were ordinary, enraged members of the public. The events were co-ordinated by Goebbels.
