the redcoats where the people that fought in the british army and war
The red coats are the british army and the blue coats were the colonists( not all colonists wear blue; the few 'good' soldiers they had did.), then later the white coats came to help the blue coats as alliances. the white coats (french) also brought supplies for the blue coats (colonists) who were leaded by george washington. :)

I think the union was considered blue jackets and Yankees while the confederate was called Grey jackets(confederates not entire sure) Yanks and the Rebs, or "Billy Yank" and "Johnny Reb". == == (Answer 1) I think it was Blue Coats and Gray Coats
The confederate soldiers (of the new Confederacy of the United States) wore grey uniforms versus the union soldiers who wore blue uniforms.
If you are asking about the American Civil War, there were no Hessian units at all. In the American War of Independence, they wore blue, Prussian-styled uniforms, and either a tricorne, fusilier cap, or grenadier cap. Hessian riflemen (jeagers) wore green coats instead (with a tricorne)
In the American Civil War, the uniform of the Union was dark blue in color, and the uniform of the Confederacy was grey. It is often described as a war of the blue and the grey.
