The actual declaration of war was caused by the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

The political agreements by the two countries soon brought in more nations. Russia mobilized against Austria-Hungary, which was left in the lurch by Germany, which did finally declare war on Russia as well, but only after attacking Belgium and France (which was aligned with Serbia). Great Britain, which had treaties with Belgium, declared war on Germany.

Later, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, Italy, and Romania joined the fighting. Italy, which had been part of the Central Powers with Germany and Austria-Hungary, instead fought with the Allies, intent on territorial gains in the Balkans.
