One key figure in WW1 was Archduke Ferdinand was killed by Gavrillo Princip on June 28 1914. Many argue that this was the start of the war as the events which followed trace their source to his killing.

However, during WW1, there were other key figures. The German leader, Kaiser Wilhelm II, was another one to consider. The emperor Franz-Joseph of Austria-Hungary was another key player. Georges Clemenceau was the PM of France, and David Lloyd George of Britain. Nicholas II of Russia was important (as he began Russia's involvement), though the Russian revolution saw him killed before the end of the war.
