The Confederacy tried desperately to obtain allies. If they could have gotten the support of Great Britain, France or even Spain, better equipment could have been brought into their troops. Unofficially Great Britain was sympathetic to their plight, but the US was able to prevent it from being made official.

Neither the Union nor the Confederacy had active allies during the US Civil War. Some Europeans had "favorites", however no nation gave (without payment ) military supplies to either side.
