At its core, it was a battle between Democracy and Communism fronted by surrogates with South Vietnam , Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines and the US representing the former, and North Vietnam, China and the USSR standing in for Communism.
You also can't forget the Hmong, who fought against the Northern Vietnamese. The Hmong allied with the US.
there was a number of diffrent countries who fought in the Vietnam War.
the "allied" forces consited of:
Australia, America, New Zeland, South Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, and South Korea.
the "axis" forces consited of:
north Vietnam backed by Soviet Russia and Soviet China. also the Viet Kong who were in south Vietnam
unfortunetly the north conquered
Anti-war protesters, anti-draft protesters, with both of those two groups, being pretty much the same group of people. If the war had not been fought with conscripted (drafted) men, protesters would not have had too much to protest about, because THEY WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO DIE OVER THERE! But since it "WAS THEM" that might become casualties in Vietnam, THEY PROTESTED THE WAR (Meaning the Draft). This is one of the reason's the US Military went to an "All-Volunteer" military, to eliminate most, if not all, anti-war protesters for the future (starting in the early 70's).
The Cold War.
An agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting for a certain time; a truce.
The Vietnam War was one of the worst in American history. Combat in the jungle was difficult, and it was hard to know who exactly was the enemy, since Vietnam had two different sides of the war as well.
The simple answer is that they did not win the war for either side, nor establish an actual moral superiority between the opposing sides.
The PHYSICAL COMBATANTS were, for the Communists: North Vietnam & the Southern based guerillas, the Viet Cong. Opposing them, were: South Vietnam, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Philippines, and the US.
When jurists cannot come to a decision, they are said to be "dead-locked."
