If your question is, "Why was Britain the most powerful country after World War II?" then the answer is it arguably wasn't. Great Britain sustained substantial damage from German bombing, and suffered immense losses during various engagements with the German War Machine. The country was more substantial damaged and weakened than other world powers, such as the United States of America, or the Soviet Union.

The United States emerged from World War II as the richest, most powerful nation on Earth.

The US has the resources and capacity to deafeat any nation on earth. Infact probally any 3 at the same time. Sorry everyboby, im not a yank just a realist, and pacafist if i might add.
It's not practical to list pretty close to every nation on earth that's at war with terrorists. Even Iraq & Afghanistan aren't to comfortable with terrorists. During the actual attack, the US was offered assistance by many nations.
The cold war was about nuclear weapons; without nukes, there would have been no cold war. Only the US had nukes prior to 1949; the US was the most powerful nation on earth...in 1949 the Soviets (Russians) tested their first nuke. They had the "bomb" now. The power had shifted.
