Germany's unrestricted U-Boat policy promted the US entry into WW-1. Zimerman (a German emabassador) told Mexico that if they helped Germany defeat America, then Mexico can have all the American land. This caused the Americans to join the war.

America joined World War 1 because the German submarines kept sinking American merchant ships this made the Americans angry and keen for revenge.

AJ: Actually they wanted to join the war because the Germans Sank Lusitania which was full of Americans!!

Woodrow Wilson primarily asked Congress to declare war on Germany due to unrestricted submarine warfare that was introduced on January 9, 1917, not necessarily involving the United States.
